Warner Ads for Obama

Former governor Mark R. Warner (D) has recorded a series of radio ads for Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama that will begin airing around the state tonight. In the ads, Warner talks about how Obama will take a bipartisan approach to restoring the economy, creating jobs, lowering taxes for middle-class families and providing affordable healthcare.

Warner Unveils New Ads

Former governor Mark R. Warner will begin broadcasting new radio and television ads tomorrow in his U.S. Senate race against former governor James S. Gilmore III. The 30-second TV ad, called "Fresh Approach," features Warner discussing the nation's economic crisis. A similar 60-second version will be broadcast on statewide radio.

Gilmore: Don't believe the Post

Republican Senate candidate Jim Gilmore's campaign manager, Dick Leggitt, sent a note to Gilmore supporters this past week trying to take the sting out of a Washington Post poll that shows Democratic candidate Mark Warner with a 30-point lead.

Summer of George,
Autumn of Warner?

Jason Alexander, an actor best known as perpetually down-and-out George Costanza on Seinfeld , has weighed into Virginia's U.S. Senate race by helping former Democratic governor Mark R. Warner raise money.

Return To Sender

From Jim Gilmore's new fundraising letter: ". . . our need is so great, I would have liked to have enclosed a 'Priority Overnight Return' envelope for you to rush back your gift."

Gilmore's Last Hope?

I'd give the edge to Warner, who was more detailed and forthcoming on the economic crisis and who seemed generally more confident and senatorial. Gilmore has an air of desperation about him these days, and he was way too defensive and brittle about his own record as governor.

Running Well?

Warner picks up more endorsements

Former governor Mark Warner picked up some more endorsements today, this time from various sheriffs across the Old Dominion.

RPV paid $80K for this??

It’s not a terrible ad, but Jim Gilmore’s first entry is far, far from a game-changer (let alone the pathetic $80K buy), and facing a 20- to 30-point deficit in the polls, that’s what he needs. But more to the point, why is the RPV and not Jim Gilmore paying for this? First of all, why does Jim Gilmore not have any money to even put a meager $80K behind a statewide ad? Was he planning on doing any TV advertising? If things are this bad, the 3rd Quarter fundraising reports should be very telling.

Warner Wins Over FOP, Chamber

Democratic Senate Candidate Mark R. Warner was endorsed today by both the Fraternal Order of Police and the U.S. Chamber Commerce, two groups that often align with Republicans in federal races.

GOPer Hits Gilmore
in Debate Flap

Republican strategist J. Kenneth Klinge called GOP Senate candidate James S. Gilmore "a hypocrite" today over Gilmore's criticism of Mark R. Warner for not yet agreeing to a statewide, televised debate.

Virginia is Warner Country

Although Jim Gilmore was there in Buena Vista today, he was practically invisible. No signs. No supporters to speak of. Completely overshadowed by the indominatable Mark Warner.

Jim Gilmore's a Hypocrite

You know, when you're trailing by 25+ points against your opponent, when you have just a tiny fraction of the money your opponent has, where everyone already knows where both candidates stand on the issues, when your opponent is the most popular political figure in the state and when you basically aren't a viable candidate, it's not uncommon for the other candidate to think it's a waste of time debating you. Back in April 2008, that was pretty much Jim Gilmore's position against Bob Marshall:

The Ballad of Mark Warner

What struck me most about former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner's keynote address last night is how his themes have hardly changed one iota since his 2001 campaign for governor. For example, here's the section about Lebanon, Virginia from his speech:

With Warner, Obama Introduces A Theme

Listening to several speeches, it seems eems like the past versus the future is going to be the general election theme. Gov. Mark Warner gave a curtain-raiser to what the Obama campaign hopes is a winning general election message -- Barack Obama is the man of the future, who understands the uncertain and changing world we live in now. John McCain is a man of the past.

The Unthinkable Happened

Something remarkable just happened on MSNBC. Chris Matthews spent at least two minutes, maybe three, musing over the substantive argument in a convention speech. It happened right after former Virginia Governor Mark Warner finished his keynote address. Matthews seized on Warner's line about the importance of asking Americans to make sacrifices--and Bush's failure to make that request after 9/11. Matthews then went on to talk about the importance of solidarity and its place in the Democratic Party's identity.

Mark Warner’s mixed blessing

Mark Warner says he needs to cross another potential career off his list—early morning TV or radio host.

Mark Warner Made An Offer

99.9 percent of the time, the man or issue I agree with belongs to a Republican. My wife is just the opposite, voting 100 percent of her time for Democrats, so we tend to cancel each other out. But with the Hokie athletic program on the rocks, I did what I had to do. I said out loud, with God as my witness, that if Warner got the Hokies through this and into the ACC, then whatever office he ran for, whenever he ran for it, I’d vote for him and I’d support him.

I'm Never Voting for Gilmore

I was around in 1997 when Republican Jim Gilmore ran for governor on the slogan "No Car Tax." Silly me; I thought that if Virginians elected him, we'd be getting rid of our car tax. Hahahahahahaha!

Davis, Warner on Campaign

Davis was then asked if Gilmore qualifies as a "centrist Republican." Davis responded, "Well Mark Warner qualifies. Mark has a very centrist image up here...In Northern Virginia Mark has some unique attributes living up here that make him particularly more formidable than the average Democrat in Northern Virginia." John Warner then chimed in, "He has also been very active in the business communities up here. I worked with Mark Warner when he was governor. He was a strong governor and he did a lot to bring in a lot of the high-tech interests, as did George Allen when he was governor."

McCain Campaign on Va.

Today, McCain political director Mike DuHaime in a conference call with Virginia reporters said "I think people are going to make decisions (on the presidential and Senate race) independent of each other," DuHaime said. DuHaime also added that Kaine, Warner and Webb were "moderate-centrist Democrats, even conservative on some issues."

We’re supposed to
vote for this guy?

A generous guy, that Jim Gilmore is. I got my hands on a piece of literature from the Gilmore Senate campaign that the local GOP was distributing last night at the Augusta County Fair. Quite rich, this thing was.

Sen. Warner avoids backing would-be GOP successor

A sitting senator resisting to back the party’s choice to succeed him would be extraordinary in itself, but Warner’s seat also is a top target for Democrats next year looking to increase its majority in the Senate.

Gilmore cancels golf outing

No real official word on exactly what went down with a Jim Gilmore golf outing this week at Kiln Creek Golf Club and Resort, but the Thursday event has been ditched.

Change Washington!

I agree with Mark Warner; what Sen. Coburn did this week demonstrates "how far we must go to get Washington functioning again." Right now, as the vast majority of Americans agree, it is almost completely dysfunctional.

Warner’s Inroads

Had a nice young woman come to our door in the sultry Henrico suburbs this evening. She was canvassing the neighborhood for Mark Warner. After I told her, in rather colorful terms, what I thought of Warner – and Jim Gilmore – we talked a little shop.

Jim Gilmore in Hot Water

This really deserves the Eliot Spitzer Award for Staggering Stupidity for the month of July, or maybe the whole summer. Who on Team Gilmore thought Googling to find another random company called “Windmill International” would be a clever idea?

Eggs, bacon and Warner

Warner settled in with a group of about a dozen local business owners, non-profit staffers and retirees to talk about the state of the economy. Not exactly cheery stuff these days. “I wanted to hear a little bit from y’all about what you’re dealing with,” Warner said.

Gilmore: “Baloney!”

Warner Releases New Ad

Democratic Senate candidate Mark R. Warner released a new television ad today that focuses on his plan for driving down gas prices and reforming the nation’s energy policies.

Who Knows More About Oil?

Does Jim Gilmore know more about energy than the Energy Information Administration? How about T. Boone Pickens? Amazingly, Gilmore believes he does.

Gilmore Touts Econ Expertise

Republican Senate hopeful Jim Gilmore recently toured Harrisonburg as part of his "I'm a Working Man's Millionaire Tour."

Ex-Top Cop Endorses Warner

W. Gerald Massengill, a retired Virginia State Police superintendent appointed by former Republican Gov. James S. Gilmore III, today endorsed Democrat Mark R. Warner for U.S. Senate.

18,000 Doors

Great news from the Democratic Coordinated Campaign: more than 400 volunteers set a June record for Virginia Democrats by knocking on over 18,000 doors this past weekend.

Hokie Guru endorses Warner

Mark Warner had to clean up the budgetary mess left by James “Fiscal Destruction” Gilmore. More importantly, however, the Hokie Guru notes that without the support of Mark Warner, Virginia Tech would not be part of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC)...

A challenge to Va. GOPers

Here’s my challenge to Virginia Republicans: document your claim that Jim Gilmore left the state without a shortfall and in good financial shape.

Tested, proven, successful

Mark Warner has proven that he can be a successful elected official and achieve results. It is for that reason, as well as reasons too numerous to cover in this post, that The Centrist Voice endorses Mark Warner in the 2008 Virginia senate race.

Gilmore for Prez still in the red

I was going through campaign finance records last night and found that Jim Gilmore’s Presidential account is $140,936 in debt
